Lusail University organized the first edition of Sustainable Development Day on Sunday, October 23, 2022. This event comes within the framework of Qatar Sustainability Week 2022, aiming to enhance local community awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, attracting the participation of more than 260 male and female students from the university. Participating students displayed posters and projects that solidified Qatar's sustainable development goals.
Among the most important topics presented and discussed by students were: Qatar's efforts to eliminate hunger, provide food security, ensure health for all, achieve equality among community members, and integrate people with special needs. Student projects focused on the importance of the environmental dimension and preserving ecosystems—marine and terrestrial—through nature reserves, the importance of treating wastewater, and extending infrastructure to preserve water resources. This was in addition to other topics that achieved great success, such as renewable energy and maintaining air quality to reduce global warming.
Since its launch in 2016, Qatar Sustainability Week has been an annual appointment to support the sustainability vision in the state. Sustainable Development Day at Lusail University represented a unique opportunity for students to showcase their skills and creativity with a focus on the most important challenges and stakes related to sustainable development. In his speech on this occasion, Dr. Abdul Nasser Al-Tamimi, Dean of the College of Education and Arts, said: "Organizing Sustainable Development Day at Lusail University falls within the framework of the university's mission to provide knowledge production that contributes to sustainable development and enhances community service. It also aligns with the university's 2020–2025 strategic plan."
Commenting on this event, students Amina Ahmed Al-Kuwari and Noura Abdulhamid Al-Emadi emphasized the importance of ecosystems, especially marine systems, and Qatar's efforts in protecting sea turtles. Student Rashid Al-Ajji spoke about the importance of renewable energy as a sustainable and clean alternative to fossil fuels, highlighting the launch of the Al Kharsaah plant. Furthermore, student Amna Ali Al Thani shed light on the importance of recycling organic waste to develop sustainable agricultural systems and provide food security, embodying the second goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
